Along the 8.9 km Pukenui Long Loop - Taraire Ridge Track is a small side track to a mature Kauri.
GZ is close the main trail with the side track to a Kauri tree. Along the Eastern side of the Taraire Ridge - Pukenui Forest Long Loop Track is a small side trail to a Kauri tree. The sign showing the side trail positioned for those hiking the loop trail clockwise and it could be easily missed if hiking the other way. The sign says that the trail is 5 minutes to a Kauri tree, but it barely a minute to the tree. However, the extra 4 minutes will be easily filled admiring this amazing tree. Bring your own scribble stick. Even though the trail clearly goes right to the base of the tree, please avoid stepping on the carpet as Kauri trees have shallow roots. Please also ensure that you have clean foot gear to avoid spreading Kauri Die Back Disease.
