Vintage Base Ball had various rules throughout the 1858 - 1867 period.

A commonly played set of rules is circa 1860. Below is a quick overview of the rules and how the game was played.

Base Ball is a gentleman's game; no swearing or betting. Monetary fines will be assessed for violations.

Play:

Hurler tosses ball to Striker:
- Balls & Strikes are not called.
- No bunting.
- Batted balls are judged fair or foul by where they first touch the ground.
- Base runners may not leave the base until ball is struck.
- Stealing is permitted only after a muff by the behind.

Striker is 'dead' when:
- Struck ball is caught on the fly (runners may return safely to bases).
- Struck ball is caught on one bounce.
- Three tossed balls are swung at and missed (fouls are not strikes!).

Runner is 'dead' when:
- Forced at a base.
- Tagged with ball when not on a base.
- Runs out of baseline.

All game and rule questions are arbitrated by the team captains and the umpire.
