The monarch butterflies are in trouble! Their numbers are down 90% of what they were just 15-20 years ago. The decrease in their numbers is most likely due to the fact that the milkweed plant population, which is a necessity to the monarch, is also down 90%.
Milkweed plants are the only source of food for the monarch caterpillar. And these plants are rapidly disappearing, due to the loss of habitat stemming from land development and the widespread spraying of weed killer on the fields where they live.
In this cache, we have left some milkweed seeds for you to plant, along with some fun monarch marbles, glass stones, magnets and other monarch trinkets.
