Geocache Description:

Do not enter the gravel driveway. Use the concrete parking lot at the Church to access this cache.

These caches are on some of the rural roads of Calhoun County. Enjoy the less traveled roads and see some unusual, interesting and historic places.

The concept of the Barn Quilt Trail series of caches is simply to take folks to a spot where a Barn Quilt may be viewed. The placement of some of the containers may take one to a location just adjacent to or within view of a residence. The Barn Quilt Trail has been in existence since 2008 and has been traveled by many folks. The locals and residents are familiar and receptive to people stopping by to view and take pictures of the Barn Quilts. Should there be someone at or around the cache site please do not compromise the cache location. Instead just log the cache as a find with a picture attached to indicate you were there.

This cache has been placed in the immediate area of Calhoun County Barn Quilt # 64 – 1930’s Airfield, which is in the Red section of the Calhoun County Barn Tour map.

Please be respectful of private property. Do not search for this cache at night! The quilt blocks on the barns are visible from the spot where the containers have been placed.

The Calhoun County Barn Quilt Tour is a year-round self-guided tour that is divided into 3 sections of the County, Blue (Southern), Yellow (Central) and Red (Northern).

The quilt numbers correspond with the map of the Calhoun County Barn Tour which may be found HERE

Originating in Grundy County Iowa in 2003 Barn Quilt Trails are now in existence in over thirty states. The Calhoun County Barn Quilt Project began in 2008 as a community based effort to promote and preserve the agricultural and rural heritage of Calhoun County.

The quilts and barns represent the women and men who settled this county. Many of the present residents are direct descendants. Most of the quilt blocks painted for the Calhoun County project were selected by the families who own the barns and are blocks created from family heirloom quilts. Many of the barns in Calhoun County are over a century old and have been in the same family for as long.

Local artists and volunteers created the barn quilt paintings making the entire project a true community effort without the use of public funding.
