First to see the sun (Chatham Islands) Traditional Cache

The Chatham Islands are very close to the dateline and just over the other side of the antimeridian (180E). Hence it is officially acknowledged as the first settled place in the world to see the sunrise on the new day. In the 2000 millennium celebrations the Chatham Islands was a busy place with media everywhere waiting to film the first sunrise.

This cache replaces another "First to see the sun" cache that was placed nearby but was archived in 2015. I found that one had been muggled in 2014 so left another container nearby for people to sign. Now that the original is archived I have converted my temporary container into a new cache. When checked on the 9 Oct 2015 it was damp inside. Not sure how that was possible in its current hiding spot. Anyway it is still there and waiting your signature with a new logbook. Not far to walk uphill from Waitangi or a short car drive. Park sensibly as some cars do use this road! Great views looking out to the north over Petre Bay, east over farmland and west over the Pacific Ocean. If you climb up here at dawn you will be one of the very first people on the planet to watch the sunrise on the new day.
