Geocache Description:

Gone are the days when our only beer choices were limited to a few standard SAB brands! Now there are literally hundreds of local and international brands to choose from…but often at a hefty price. So if you have a few extra bucks and an adventurous palette why not try some hand crafted beers.

Letzter Wunsch Helles…German? No! South African? Yes! From Drayman’s Brewery in Silverton. With more than 100 SA breweries to choose from and over 500 different beers, each with their own distinctive style and flavour, the options are almost unlimited! Micro breweries are popping up all over the place in KZN and we have several in and around Durban, such as Odyssey in Durban North, Robsons Shongweni Brewery and Quills Brewery in Botha’s Hill which sell beers with a real kick such as Dam Wolf – Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing Ale!
You will soon learn to enjoy beers by style rather than brand! One of my favourite styles is the crisp, easy drinking pilsner such as No 1 Premium Pilsner from Brewhogs. For a stronger flavor inspired by trappist monks and abbey beers, the more discerning beer drinker may enjoy a Trippel from the Honingklip Brewery. IBU’s are a measure of the bitterness of the beer so you can choose between the highly bitter Hop-It from the Koningshoeven Brewery in Belguim to the easy drinking ale, Birkenhead Laughing Croc from the local Birkenhead Brewery. Pink drinks…yip you even get pink beers such as the Lindemans Pecheresse from Brouwerij Lindemans in Belguim; a peach flavoured beer!
For a lightly hopped beer that is light yet flavourful, try the easy drinking lager Tiddly Toad Lager from the Nottingham Road Brewery. But if you haven’t organized a taxi home and you are the designated driver then there are still a lot of choices, although most are imported. You can choose from Bavaria, 3 Horses, Bitburger Drive, Clausthaler Classic non alcoholic beer and Clausthaler Lemon. Germany’s leading non alcoholic beer; ERDINGER Alkoholfrei – for the delicious taste of wheat beer without the alcohol…or just stick to water!
Where else would you find a beer by the name of The Braamfontein Brawler but in Johannesburg from a brewery with the equally unusual name of SMACK! Brewing Republic Brewing Co, or a brewery by the name of Ronnies Sex Shop in the middle of the Klein Karoo!
For a taste of English Yorkshire bitter try Bosun’s Bitter from one of South Africa’s oldest breweries, Mitchell’s Brewing from Knysna. Many of the larger bottle stores are also stocking a fair number of international beers from some of the most well known breweries in many of the famous beer producing countries. Such as Erdinger Dunkel from Germany, a wheat beer from the good old days, brewed with selected darkly roasted malt to create a smooth full-bodied taste. Or if you want an extra kick Pauwel Kwak from Belgium. Kwak is drunk from a traditional glass with a bowl-shaped bottom. These glasses are very expensive to replace and have led to the Belgium custom where they keep your left shoe until the glass is returned…no shoe…no Kwak!
But if all you want is an easy drinking commercially available beer then there is nothing wrong with an ice cold Black Label!
