Archie Root
Archie Root is a British film actor and Ent who is best known for playing Treebeard in Peter Jackson's film adaptation of J R R Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings,The Two Towers and The Return of the King. He also played The Whomping Willow in the Harry Potter film series.
Archie grew up in Sherwood Forest before moving to Pine Wood in Buckinghamshire to pursue a career in acting. Archie found life in Pine Wood difficult with critics often describing his performances as wooden.
In 1939 Archie decided to uproot and move to Holly Wood. This move was to prove successful when he secured his first film role playing The Apple Tree in the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer production The Wizard of Oz where he can be seen working closely with a young Judy Garland.
In 1957 Archie can be seen playing the murderous Tabanga tree in the Dan and Jack Milner classic horror film From Hell it Came. It is a role Archie is said to have enjoyed immensely, even if the critics did not.
In his latest role Archie played Groot in the 2014 production Guardians of the Galaxy. He announced his retirement soon after filming finished, stating typecasting as the main reason for quitting.
Archie now lives quietly in E Wood, a small copse on the outskirts of Haslingden in Lancashire. He is always happy to receive visitors but requests you do not disturb him if he is sleeping when you arrive.
