2001: A Cache Odyssey Traditional Geocache

The B.G. Parks mandate for the geocaches at Wintergarden Preserve is to bring people here to visit our wonderful city resource, keep the social trails to a minimum, and to provide opportunities for families to interact with nature.  To this end, we replace the caches each October with fresh ones.

When we were removing the 2014 caches, we were discussing what theme this year’s caches would be.  I prefer something more whimsical rather than bird or tree or snake names (but snake names might be cool).  That evening we went and saw The Martian and loved it.  The next day I saw a trailer for the new Star Wars movie… Ah-Ha! A theme emerges.  Soooo….

2001:A Space Odyssey looks forward to 15 years ago (take that, Back to the Future!) when humans have colonized the moon and space travel is commonplace.  The movie pits the human astronauts against Hal9000, a "foolproof" computer programmed to mimic the human brain.  They are on a trip to Jupiter to investigate the possibility of intelligent life elsewhere in the solar system.
