1. Haytor Bracken Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

dartymoor: Archiving this series after two years as the paths have become even more overgrown in this time and 5-6 was always really hard going. Kept it going a month longer for the Mega.

The caches were collected in this morning and a biodegradable scrap of paper left at #1 as explanation for anyone with an old PQ.

Thank you to those who enjoyed this series.

Geocache Description:

From the main lower car park, head towards the waypoint which is the first all-season crossing of the small mire. Going directly to this will ensure wet feet whatever the season!

This is a short and brackeny walk away from the main honeypot of Haytor of about 2.5 miles. This section doesn't get so many visitors but has some interesting history and at times, some nice views across Torbay and Teignmouth.

Notes:

  • The Walk: Involves a reasonably easy stream hop before the first cache, then a gradient-hugging path around to Bagtor Mine ruins. From there, there is an uphill stretch with small animal paths and tinner's girts, eventually cresting the hill with an easy stroll back down to the car park.
  • Livestock: Cattle, ponies and sheep confirmed on this route.
  • Dogs: A great walk for dogs, but beware cattle, ponies and sheep. DO keep close control of your dog! No stiles on the route. Adders have been reported on these quiet tracks on warm days. Adders bite many dogs on Dartmoor, sometimes fatally. Be careful!
  • Bikes: DNP discourage the use of mountain bikes away from marked trails for good reason. This is not a suitable route for bikes (I speak as a cyclist), please don't attempt this series on bikes.
  • Caches: Mostly "small" tubs or click-lock containers.
  • Logging: Please write an interesting log for each cache, not just TFTC or a cut and paste - I enjoy reading about your visit and it's very boring to get dull logs. Be inventive!
  • Wildlife: Lots of skylarks, stonechinks and Buzzards. I've also seen rabbit and fox here. Adders have been reported on warm days.
  • Bonus: No bonus cache and no clues to collect.
  • Preparation: Although not far from the road, this is still Dartmoor and it's still sensible to prepare for sudden weather changes. When laying these caches, a thick fog descended reducing visibility to 50 feet. This is not unusual!
  • Permission: Permission kindly granted by Dartmoor National Park using their Geocaching Guidelines
