Geocache Description:

To be able to open the cache you will need to get some information off a sign that will be a short distance ahead of your vehicle if you park at the given coordinates.  Then:

&BST = the year a Topographer visited the site.

After getting the above date the combination is SB&T. After entering the combination press down on the lever to the left of the numbers. Be sure to scramble the numbers after signing the log.

The cache is placed in the Mines of Spain Recreation Area with the permission of the Iowa DNR.  The park is open year around from 4 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.  Watch out for muggles.

You need to hook a fingernail under the cover to open it because it does not spring open like it should!

Zebulon Pike 1779-1813:  Age 26 at the time, in 1805 Pike led a company of men on a reconnaissance of the Upper Mississippi River to chart the river and weather.  He noted the villages and the number of Indian’s hunting grounds and furs.  He collected mineral and vegetation samples.  He arrived near this location at the mouth of Catfish Creek at noon on Sunday September 1, 1805 to meet with Julien Dubuque and the Mesquakie Indians.  He left at 4:00 p.m. due to illness.  Pike returned Wednesday, April 23, 1806 at 10:00 a.m. when he found some traders and 40-50 Mesquakie.
