You are now walking down the path that leads to the shrieking wood or by now you may even be in the middle of it!!! And why is it called Shrieking wood? The story told by locals is that a woodsman was working in the area round the Common with a young boy. Whether it was because the boy was not working hard enough or it was something else that angered the woodsman no one can really say. But what is known is the woodsman and the boy got into a heated argument and woodsman killed the boy with his axe. Some say he cut the boyshead clean off, some say he split it in two. To cover his murderous deed the woodsman then hid the body of the boy within the trunk of a tree and told his neighbours the boy had run off. From that moment on chilling screams could be heard coming from the wood and continued until one night the woodsman was drinking in the White Hart inn and as he got drunk he confessed to the boy’s murder. Since then the ghostly screams have not been heard, or have they? People still say strange sounds still come from the surrounding wood whether it is from the dead boy, the traffic from the A127 or just the wildlife no one is sure, But if you listen carefully you may just hear something which doesn’t sound quite right.
Congratulations to tractor andy on a rare FTF.
