Geocache Description:

Welcome to “Marble Town”*.  A marble town is another name for a cemetery. I know there are some Cachers who don’t like these types of caches but I agree with the argument that these are pieces of local history that the "residents" paid a lot of money for people to see, and are some very interesting places. There are some ground rules, please…

1) Above all be respectful of the area you are in!

2) Follow all Geocaching rules as per the guidelines.

3) Caches will NEVER be placed in a way that you will have to tear anything apart.

4) Cache is available from dawn to dusk only!

5) Have fun, enjoy your surroundings, and feel free to share pics of your adventures here.

This Marbletown cache is at “Leavens Cemetery,” also known as Gifford Cemetery in Town of Lake Luzerne. In my brief research both online and at the site I could find very little information. In fact there is absolutely no signage at the cemetery itself, though it is quite obvious it is regularly maintained. However, looking over some of the records I did learn a few interesting things…

The most recent burial here was in 1945.

The earliest date I could find was an individual who was born in 1746. Keep in mind our nation was born in 1776. This person was born thirty years before that. Just let that sink in for a moment.

There are three individuals for whom there are no birth or death dates listed. I have no idea how or why there is no information, but it just makes me think and wonder…

The cache:
The cache itself is a bison tube with come cammo tape hanging about chest high on a tree branch. It is NOT in the stone wall! Yes, I am making it easy for you. I have hidden it from muggles, but easy for any cacher to find.

Cheers!

* I am borrowing on the tradition of “Marble Town” caches as started by BillVP913. Thanks Bill!
