Geocache Description:

Brackenhurst #1: Garden

This is one of three geocaches placed at this Conference Centre. The cache, a customised bottle-tops container, is hidden at the foot of the corner fence post in this lovely small garden.

Brackenhurst History (part 1)

In 1914 the Hudson Cane family emigrated from England to what was then British East Africa. Travelling from Mombasa to Limuru by train, they climbed into an ox-cart with all their possession and headed down a mud trail from Limuru towards the place now called Tigoni.

When the Canes purchased 157 acres of land from a Mr. Charles Major for 500 British pounds with the intent of growing coffee, they went against the advice of local people who said they were crazy to buy that land as Limuru was too cold and misty, and that they would never be able to grow coffee.' They were obviously wrong as coffee grows well in this area . . . (continues with Brakenhurst #2)

How to reach the cache location:

Option 1 (scenic and slower): Take the Limuru Road heading north past the Village Market mall as far as the Banana Hills road junction @ S 01 12.428 E 36 47.153. Turn off to the right (north) and follow this road up through the bustling Muchatha (2km from the junction) and Banana Hills (5km) areas emerging back out into the countryside, passing the Kentmere Club on your right (10km - and location of two Tea Series caches, and continuing for another 7km or so through lovely tea country as far as the Brackenhurst turn-off @ S 01 07.510 E 36 40.564. Turn right (north) here and follow the winding road to the entrance gate. Park your car in the parking area behind the reception offices @ S 01 07.232 E 36 40.606.

Option 2 (main highway - more direct, faster, not scenic!): Take the main A104 highway heading west out of Nairobi and continue for approximately 35 km to the Limuru turn-off @ S 01 06.446 E 36 37.837. Turn left here and around the bend to the T-junction where you again turn left and follow the road for about 7km passing through the bustling Limuru town, over the railway tracks and on to the Brackenhurst turn-off @ S 01 07.510 E 36 40.564. Turn left (north) here and follow the winding road to the entrance gate. Park your car in the parking area behind the reception offices @ S 01 07.232 E 36 40.606.

Thanks are due to Brackenhurst management for kindly granting permission for the caches to be placed.
