Geocache Description:

The Naval Battle of Vila Franca was a locked clash on July 26 de1582, south of the island of Sao Miguel, Azores, between a Portuguese-French force, commanded by Filuppo Strozzi, and a Castilian armed (but that included much of the Portuguese fleet), commanded by Don Alvaro de Bazán, Marquis of Santa Cruz, in the context of the war that followed the acclamation of D. António I and the entry of Philip II of Spain held by the Portuguese throne. The Portuguese-French forces were defeated, Don Antonio was forced to take refuge on Terceira Island, followed by a huge massacre in Vila Franca do Campo, the largest ever recorded in the Azores, leading to all parties over 2500 dead.

It was the first naval battle where the great galleons intervened, serving to test new tactics and maneuvers. The Castilian victory paved the way for the naval reinforcement of Castile, which would lead to Invincible Armanda.

On August 1 he landed ashore field master Francisco de Bobadilla with four companies of soldiers, leading among all French prisoners, which loudly and in public gallows to read them a sentence that condemned them to death as disturbers of the peace between France and Castile. The ruling, signed by Don Alvaro de Bazán, sent behead the nobles and hang the other, except those who have not reached the age of 18 years.

And so was fulfilled the sentence if decapitating 28 French gentlemen, and 50 minor condition, hanged addition to these many hundreds of soldiers and sailors. These executions were made very slowly and rawness, extending throughout the day, and their decapitated bodies piled up on the forecourt of Vila Franca matrix. Some of the sailors were hanged in the islet of Vila Franca, leaving the bodies to rot on the gallows as a warning to the other French who were still embedded in the islands.

As for the earth, only a gentleman of Vila Franca, which served as a councilor of the House, he sent and beheaded, and the other condemned in minor penalties.
