The bobcat is an adaptable predator that inhabits wooded areas, as well as semi-desert, urban edge, forest edges, and swampland environments. Though the bobcat prefers rabbits and hares, it will hunt anything from insects, chickens, geese and other birds and small rodents to deer. It is about twice as large as the domestic cat. The bobcat breeds from winter into spring and has a gestation period of about two months.
As you are hiking the trails, look for bobcat prints in the mud. A dog paw print will show a claw at the end of each pad. A cat’s claws retract and so will not be visible in a paw print.
