津軽東部に位置する黒石市は、南北に東北自動車道、東西に国道102号が走る「米とリンゴ」の田園観光都市です。
「道の駅・虹の湖」は、弘前市と十和田湖のほぼ中間、浅瀬石川ダムの建設によって整備された「ダム公園」にあります。
5万9千ｍ2の広大な敷地には、桜やシャクヤク、ツツジ、シャクナゲなどが咲いております。
駅からはランプの宿で知られる青荷温泉へはすぐ。
「津軽こけし館」「津軽伝承工芸館」「中野もみじ山」も近くです。
１１月中旬～４月中旬は冬季閉鎖でお店は開いてません。（自動販売機は使えます）
