Geocache Description:

A little less than a year has passed since the start of the Harlingen Geo-Quest so we have added a few more caches starting December 21st. We also have moved some of the containers that have been subject to Muggle tampering. If you are new to the Quest make sure to check our website http://www.myharlingen.us/page/parksandrec.geocachinghome and if you are coming back, thank you and feel free to earn a second coin by finding the new and transplanted caches.

Our Harlingen Parks and Recreation Geo-Quest brings you to City Lake/Liberty Gardens.  This seven acre park consists of a 7/8 mile trail around the water and a meditation garden across the street.  Parking is available at the nearby Harlingen Library as well as on the side of the road.  Stealth will be required to retrieve this cache due to the popularity of the park and the location right off the trail, so mid-day is a preferable time to look.

The lake is a natural depression now used as a reservoir for the Harlingen Waterworks System.  In 1976 part of 6th and 7th street were combined and named '76 Drive to commemorate the 200th anniversary of our nation's independence.  Along with this, Liberty Garden was constructed.  Commissioner Jim Werner, Bicentennial Chairman, was key is this project as was E.O and Eleanor Matz, both dedicated to the growth and beautificaton of Harlingen.

For more information about the Geo-Quest visit the Harlingen Parks and Recreation website by going to www.myharlingen.us and clicking on the Parks and Recreation Tab.
