Rice Park is a small county park located Upcountry, Maui about 2,500 feet above sea level, on Lower Kula Road. The views from here are spectacular and breathtaking. You can see the North and South shores, with Molokini and Lanai on the horizon. This is a great place to watch the sunset as the sun dips behind the West Maui Mountains. Children also love Rice Park for its steep, grassy hills which provide a great ride on a large piece of cardboard.
This is a memorial park name after Harold ‘Oskie’ Rice. In 1965, he donated land in Kula to the Kiwanis Club of Maui, who in turn donated it to the county. This ‘ hall of fame’ paniolo, or cowboy, was manager of one of the three largest ranches in upcountry. A legendary island polo player, he was known as ‘ a cowboy of cowboys in Hawaii ’ and honored for starting the Maui Roping Club and sponsoring the first Makawao Rodeo.
