Geocache Description:

Use caution when seeking this cache. The area can be slippery if wet. Parking is available on either side of the stream.

The Kenduskeag Stream – Native American for “eel catching place” - has wound its way from Garland, Maine to Bangor since the end of the last ice age. It is part of the Penobscot River Basin and is 32.6 miles long. It flows southeast until it empties into the Penobscot River. It consists of many rapids as well as long stretches of still water. In the 1800’s the stream was dotted with saw and grist mill; some of which are still visible in some areas.

The Kenduskeag Stream Canoe Race is the largest paddling event in New England and one of the largest in the United States. It was started in May, 1967 by Lew Gilman and Ed Colman and is held every year on the 3rd Saturday in April. It begins in the small town of Kenduskeag, Maine and winds its way 16.5 miles to Downtown Bangor. There were only 34 paddlers that first year, but now can have up to 1500 paddlers for each race. The paddlers come from all over the world and compete in different paddling classes for the fastest time. Currently, the record holder is Robert Lang of Renforth, New Brunswick who finished the race in 1:50:08 in 1997. The locals love to flock to Six Mile Falls to line the banks and watch the paddlers maneuver through the Class II-III rapids. They cheer for those who make it over the falls but really are there to watch those who do not make it get a good old fashion dunking!

This cache was placed here by the 8th grade students at Central Middle School in Corinth, ME. They did research about the stream and the canoe race to be able to share their knowledge with others. It is an ammo box that is well hidden. When placed it contained: Panther PRIDE pens, pencils, and pin. Jacguar pin and charms, pocket calendar, Wreaths Across America pins, small trinkets and toys, log book and pen as well as a Panther PRIDE tee-shirt for first to find! It also has a trackable panther that the students want to have travel the world!
