If you are lucky, you see them as shooting stars in a dark night sky as they burn up upon entry into earth's athmosphere. If you are not so lucky, the object is large enough to not fully burn and melt upon entry and may cause damage of varying severity:
Meteorites.
Meteorits are either metalloid or rocky objects of various sizes, which can be fragments of comets or asteroids, or debris from impact on other moons or planets. If these objects from space do hit the ground, they may create an impact crater. Around the impact site objects of molten glass or stone may be found.
Earth has been exposed to such fire from space over millions of years (and Earth is still there).
Dinosaurs are believed to have been extinguished in the aftermath of a huge meteorite hitting earth and changing climate so rapidly, that life on earth changed. Bad day for the dinosaur.
More recently, on Feb 15th, 2013 Russia encountered a Meteorite Entry into athmosphere, which caused damage in the area near the city of Chelyabinsk. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/ Chelyabinsk_meteor
About the cache:
If you come to these coordinates, Dinosaurs are the eye catcher. But you will also find a meteorite here, which is the center of attention for this cache. To claim this cache, send answers to the following questions via the 'Message this owner' function of this cache listing:
a) Where was this meteorite found?
b) When was the believed impact on Earth?
c) Describe the meteorite (surface / size / substance / ....anything that catches your eye)
d) What do you call these objects formed upon impact of a Meteorite around the crater?
DO NOT post pictures of the meteorite with your log, to not spoil the fun for fellow cachers.
After sending the answers, go ahead and log your find. No need to wait for response
BUT: Logging without ever turning in answers, nope, that does not count. That's the way to get couch cachers going. Reserving the right to delete logs when not turning in answers.
