Geocache Description:

Salty Dog, an expedition to the wilds of the Estancia basin elevation 6041 feet. Why is it called Salty Dog? You'll just have to go to find out.

Way out in the wilds of the Estancia Basin, lying low between the Manzano Mountains and the Pedernal Hills, an area that starred in New Mexico's Indian and Spanish Missionary history but now is seen by very few people.

This cache, located off Hwy 60 takes the visitor to the closes thing central NM has to a "beach"

Cache is a .30 cal ammo can located somewhere near a saltbush. This cache is chock full of great stuff:

East German hat emblem
Bottle of H20
MRE pound cacke - good forever!
Mardi Gras coins Galveston TX 2000
Star Wars Blockade Runner spaceship toy
Helodriver's Rotorwash Music compilation CD
Toy ship
Wire ties
Soap
Sand Dollar from Mendocino CA
Petrified wood
Bug ball
Folding fan
Arizona sticker

This is a unique area, park at the highway 60 rest area here: N 34.35.902 W 105.55.172, then cross through the cattle fence at the area where the wires are spread, (many footprints here) As in all things hiking, the direct route may not be the best. Round trip hike about 2 miles.

Good Luck,

Helodriver
