In 1988 to 1989 Auckland Zoo hosted two Giant Panda from China, Xiao Xiao and Fei Fei.
Prime Minister Key said pandas were a "subject dear to my heart", and an idea he had been entertaining since first raising the possibility with China's President Xi Jinping in 2010.
"They would need a bit of money. Having spent a bit of time on this process I know what is involved. It's everything, not just for the enclosure, but you have to have someone who comes from China to look after them, you have to feed them a certain kind of bamboo so there are quite a lot of costs."
This little relatively unknown New Plymouth track would be an ideal habitat for Panda - but could we afford them?!
