The Berry Consols Company operated one of the more successful mines on the Berry Lead system. It was the second largest gold producer (after Madam Berry). The extant remains at No. 1 shaft, taken together with the surviving engineering drawings for this installation, make it possible to show the general configuration of pumping and winding machinery driven by simple horizontal steam engines. This was one of the last such plant installed on the lead system as the duties subsequently required the use of more powerful and more economical compound engines.
