This mural is to honor and show respect for all the area men and women, past and present, who have put on the uniform and done their duty for our country. The funeral here depicted was for Sgt. Mike Mikenas in October of 1918 near the end of WW I. Sgt. Mikenas was one of 19 men and women from the area who lost their lives in World War I . There would be a total of 89 Kewaneeans who perished. The Solider in the center of the mural is an illustration done by a Kewanee author, Leroy Cyrus Baldridge, who was the illustrator during WW I for the the military newspaper "Star and Strips" . A book by Baldridge, "I Was There", is where this dough-boy illustration can be found. To the right, the poem about the poppies, as the only living thing that survives in Flanders' Field, often read at ceremonies across the nation on Memorial Day. Placed with permission. Dollar Coin to FTF.
