Qualche tempo fa, in questo luogo, mi imbattei in un magnifico esemplare di vipera aspis.
E se fosse ancora là a guardia della cache?
A while ago, I spotted a beautiful specimen of vipera aspis in this very place.
Maybe the viper is still there protecting the cache from muggles...
VIPERA ASPIS
È il più comune viperide italiano, presente in tutte le regioni ad eccezione della Sardegna.
La Vipera aspis vive in luoghi freschi ed assolati, prediligendo ambienti poveri di vegetazione, prati, pascoli e soprattutto pietraie.
Lunga al massimo 94 cm, presenta testa più o meno distinta dal collo cosi come la coda che risulta essere tozza. Come le altre tre specie di viperidi presenti in Italia Vipera aspis è ovovivipara; nascono da 6 a 8 piccoli di 15–20 cm, che sono autosufficienti e possiedono già ghiandole velenifere. Possono raggiungere anche i vent'anni di vita. Si ciba di topi, lucertole e piccoli uccelli. Si tratta di un animale territoriale.
Il suo veleno è molto attivo nei confronti dei piccoli animali, dal momento che contiene sia neurotossine che emotossine, tuttavia raramente si configura mortale per l'uomo.
Contrariamente alle credenze popolari la Vipera non è assolutamente aggressiva; se non viene molestata, non rappresenta un pericolo per l'uomo, perché, di fronte ad un fattore di disturbo, tende a scappare e a nascondersi. In media ogni anno si verificano 257 morsi di vipera di cui uno mortale.
Il morso di vipera
Nell'uomo la sintomatologia in caso di morso è caratterizzata da manifestazioni locali e sistemiche. Manifestazioni localizzate in prossimità del morso: - dolore - edema duro progressivo - cianosi ed ecchimosi - linfangite ed adenopatia - i due forellini nel punto del morso non sempre presenti.
Manifestazioni sistemiche: - cefalea, nausea, vomito, dolori addominali, agitazione - depressione cardiocircolatoria, ipotensione e shock (queste ultime possibili in bambini, persone malate o sensibili al veleno) - alterazioni della coagulazione.

VIPERA ASPIS
Vipera aspis is a venomous viper species found in southwestern Europe and the only potential mortal serpent in Italy.
The species grows to an average total length of 60–65 centimetres. Males can reach a maximum total length of 94cm. The tail is very short and distinguishable form the rest of the body. The head is broad, triangular and quite distinct from the neck.
In Italy it is often found in areas with low mountains or hills, notably in limestone regions, but sometimes occurs in lower plains. It has a preference for vegetated areas or environments with at least some cover.
A bite from this species can be severe and very painful. According to Stemmler, about 4% of all untreated bites are fatal. Lombardi and Bianco (1974) mention that this species is responsible for 90% of all cases of snakebite in Italy and it is the only mortal snake in the country.
The venom
Envenomation symptoms include rapidly spreading acute pain, followed by edema and discoloration. Severe haemorrhagic necrosis may occur within a few hours. Vision may be severely impaired, most likely due to degradation of blood and blood vessels in the eyes. The venom has both coagulant and anticoagulant effects. The venom may also affect glomerular structure, which can lead to death due to renal failure.
The Vipera Aspis is not aggressive and if left undisturbed, it does not represent any danger.
