A evolução geológica da Ilha do Mel se deu pelas variações do nível do mar que ocorreram nos últimos milhares de anos.
- Aproximadamente 120 mil anos atrás o nível do mar estava de 6 a 10 metros acima do nível atual. A Ilha do mel era apenas um pequeno arquipélago.
Aproximately 120 thousand years ago, the sea level was from 6 to 10 meters higher than today. Honey Island (Ilha do Mel) was just a tiny archipelago.
- Entre 21500 e 18000 anos atrás, o nível do mar estava em torno de 130 metros abaixo do atual, fazendo com que a Ilha do Mel deixasse de existir, ficando ligada ao continente.
Between 21500 and 18000 years ago, the sea level went down to about 130 meters (~390 feet) lower than today, joining Honey Island with the mainland.
- De 5000 e 5400 anos atrás, o nível mar esteve entre 2,5 a 3,5 metros acima do atual.
From 5000 to 5400 years ago, the sea level rose and was from 2.5 to 3.5 meters (~7.5 to ~10.5 feet) higher than today.
- A partir de então, ou até mil anos antes, começou-se a formar a parte norte da ilha de oeste para leste. O nível do mar começou a abaixar para chegar ao nível atual.
From then on, or a thousand years earlier, the north part of the island began forming from west to east. The sea level started lowering to reach what it is today.
- O formato atual da Ilha do Mel foi atingido na últimas centenas de anos.
The current shape of the island was achieved in the last few hundred years.
Acredita-se que quando o nível do mar estava de 2,5 a 3,5 metros acima do atual (item c), foram formadas dunas sobrepostas entre o Morro do Meio e o Morro do Miguel. Elas existem até hoje e estão presentes em todas as imagens, com exceção da primeira. Ao olho nu, elas são bem visíveis como um elevado entre os dois morros. Este geocache não só o leva a um lugar onde tem-se uma visão privilegiada, como também sugere uma caminhada opcional por cima desta formação.
English It is believed that when the sea level was from 2.5 to 3.5 meters (~7.5 to ~10.5 feet) higher than today (item c), superimposed dunes were formed between Middle Hill (Morro do Meio) and Miguel's Hill (Morro do Miguel). They still exist today and visible in all images in this description, except the first one. To the naked eye, they are visible as a short hill between the other two. This geocache not only takes you to a place with a priviledged view of the formation, but also suggests and optional hike on top of it.

1. Qual a altura relativa das dunas quando comparadas ao morro do Miguel (o mais ao Sul)?
2. O que você está em cima?
3. O que mais pode ser encontrado nas coordenadas listadas?
On the listed coordinates, look towards waypoint R0 (S 25° 33.454 W 048° 18.347), you should be looking at the superimposed dunes. Send a message to the cache owner with the answers to the following questions:
1. What is the relative height of the dunes when compared to Miguel's Hill (the southmost one)?
2. What what you standing on?
3. What else can be found at the listed coordinates?
Caminhada Opcional/Optional Hike
Fica sugerida uma caminhada por cima das dunas. É só entrar na trilha cuja entrada é indicada pelo ponto T0. Note como a vegetação muda no momento em que você sobe nas dunas.
A hike on top of the dunes is suggested. All you have to do is go to the trailhead on waypoint T0. Note how the vegetation changes once you step on the dunes.
Chegando na Ilha/Reaching the Island
Pegar o barco em Pontal do Sul ou em Paranaguá. Não são permitidos carros na ilha, entretanto, há grandes estacionamentos no continente para quem está visitando. O acesso ao cache é mais fácil para quem desce em Encantadas.
The island can be reached by boat, you can get on one in Pontal do Sul or Paranaguá. Cars are not allowed on the island, however, there are parking lots on the mainland. Access to the geocache is easier if you get droped off on Encantadas.
