In days gone by everyone who was apart of Delta Company carried at least one of these with them at all times when in action. It was a staple to every man`s combat load.
These days Delta Company has a milk crate or two full of these guys that have been dug up from previous lifetimes. Privates are aware of the weight of these relics, and loathe carrying them out to the field for the last resort training exercise. It`s not so much that they weigh a lot, it's the pick up and inventory of each and every one that gets old really quick. It seems that there is always one that has rolled away or has made itself one with the ground, hidding under leaves or branches, not wanting to return to the training supply area. Meanwhile, the NCO`s laugh at the folly and throw the horseshoes in the pit nearby until the exercise is complete.
Afterward`s the stories fly how they threw the real thing, once, a long time ago. There is always the story of the one fella who forgot to pull the pin, or who forgot to throw it far enough from the bunker.
Well not to brag or anything, but this Joe is qualified at horseshoes and hand grenades. Okay you got me, it was at least five years ago since I qualified at the Company horseshoe tournament.
