The tunnel through Staple Hill was designed by W.H. Townsend and built in 1832-1835 as part of the Bristol and Gloucestershire Railway and was opened on 6th August 1835. The tunnel was originally 12 feet wide and was a horse operated railway tunnel, but was enlarged to 26 feet during 1843 and 1844 to accommodate two 7 feet gauge tracks. The airshafts which are square in section are located on the south side of the tunnel and date from the original construction. The length of the tunnel is 515 yards and was last used by trains in 1969.
