Lake of the Woods is a body of water located in Manitoba, Ontario and Minnesota. The shoreline is over 40,000 km's, however if you include the shorelines of the14,522 islands located in Lake of the Woods, it is over 104,000 km's!
Lake of the Woods is home to walleye, northern pike, perch, sauger, crappie, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, lake trout, lake sturgeon, whitefish, suckers and muskellunge.
Smallmouth bass are similar to and often get confused with largemouth bass. A quick way to distinguish between a smallmouth bass and largemouth bass is the upper jaw of a smallmouth bass does not extend beyond the eye, whereas the upper jaw of the largemouth bass does extend beyond the eye. Smallmouth bass also have dark vertical broken bars and the largemouth bass has a broken horizontal stripe.
I always have fun when reeling in a smallmouth bass, as they usually jump around and will sometimes breach the surface, putting up a pretty good fight.
Above is a picture of Karma and a smallmouth bass that Muggle Husband caught while fishing in Lake of the Woods. Notice the identifying factors of the dark vertical bars and the upper jaw not extending past the eye.
