Matamata airfield is a national centre for gliding activities. The thermals generated over the warm flat pasturelands and the uplift of winds along the nearby Kaimai Ranges provide great conditions for those interested in flying gliders. The Matamata Soaring Centre maintains and manages gliding facilities at the airfield at Waharoa, just north of Matamata. In particular, the MSC owns the clubhouse, accommodation facilities, and organises soaring competitions and events.
Piako Gliding Club is based at the Matamata Soaring Centre clubhouse.
The cache is a pill container hidden near the entrance to the airfield close to the highway. Take care when parking in this place as the highway is very close by and cars are going past at 100 km/hr. Keep a close eye on young children when searching.
