Geocache Description:

As a kid, I was entertained for countless hours by The Three Stooges. Now as an older adult, I am looking back and appreciating their work once again.

Woman Haters is the first short subject film starring the slapstick comedy team The Three Stooges and was released on May 5, 1934. The trio made a total of 190 shorts for Columbia Pictures between 1934 and 1959.

THE PLOT

The Stooges, employed as traveling salesmen, join the Woman Haters Club. They swear never to get romantically involved with a woman. That does not last very long. Jim (Larry) finds an attractive woman, Mary (played by Marjorie White), falls in love, and has proposed marriage. Misogynists Tom (Moe) and Jack (Curly) talk him out of it. However during the party, Mary's intimidating father threatens Jim to marry his attractive daughter by telling him a story about his other, unattractive daughter having a fiance who tried to abandon her on their wedding day. He and his brothers had roughed him up for it but also forced him to go through with the ceremony. Jim is convinced to go through the ceremony much to the man's dismay. Later, on a train ride, the confrontation escalates between the Stooges and Mary.

Mary uses her feminine charm to woo both Jack and Tom in an attempt to make Jim jealous. Each is attracted to her charms as she proves the oath they swore as Women Haters was fraudulent (though Jack attempts to resist her). Finally, Mary tells Tom and Jack the truth, that she and Jim are married, and pushes her way into bed with the trio, knocking Tom and Jack out the train window in the process. The film closes as the Stooges, now old men, finally reunite at the now almost empty Woman Haters club house when Jim enters and declares he wants to rejoin.

TRIVIA

All of the dialog in this Stooges short film was delivered in rhyme, and Jazz age style music plays throughout the entire feature.

The short features the memorable song "For You, My Life, My Love, My All", which is serenaded to Mary twice during the short.

Curly Howard was billed under his pre-stooge name "Jerry Howard" in this short. The opening sequence of this Stooges short spelled Curly's name as "Curley".

Unusually, the Stooges had different names in this short: Curly is "Jackie", Moe is "Tom" and Larry is "Jim". This also marked one of the few Stooge shorts that features Larry as the lead character.

The short includes a young Walter Brennan playing the train conductor being initiated into the Woman Haters Club by Moe and Curly. Brennan is one of three men to win three acting Oscars (the other two being Jack Nicholson and Daniel Day-Lewis), having won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1936, 1938 and 1940. From 1957–1963, he starred in the ABC television series The Real McCoys, a situation comedy about a poor West Virginia family that relocated to a farm in southern California.

The very attractive Marjorie White plays Mary, Jim's wife in this short.

Unfortunately, tragedy befell the 30 plus year old actress shortly after filming this short. On August 20, 1935, White was a passenger in a car driven by Marlow M. Lovell on the Roosevelt Highway near the Bel Air Beach Club, in Santa Monica, California. It sideswiped the car of a couple who had been married only an hour before, and overturned. A coroner's jury decided that the reckless driving of Lovell was to blame for the accident. White was riding with Lovell in the open car because another member of the party, Gloria Gould, was without a wrap. Gould was following Lovell's car in another vehicle with White's husband. White was the only person seriously injured. She died of internal hemorrhaging the next day, August 21, 1935, at a Hollywood hospital.
