We were out with PureHearts and Burberts as the Sies Compardres geocaching. Our little doxy, Petey, went with us. As we were walking to a cache Petey was following behind us. When we found the cache we looked and Petey was gone. We assumed that he went back to the pickup to wait for us, as he usually does. We get back to the pickup and no Petey. So we started looking. The six of us looked for three hours calling, walking a grid a half mile in all directions, honking the horn, anything to try and find him. No luck. We were holding it together, barely, and decided we would put his bed, Rich's sweatshirt and a large bowl of water out in case he came back. We were going to go down the road a few miles and them come back and check, if he wasn't there then we decided to come back in the morning and start searching again. As we drove down the road we kept looking for tracks in the loose sand and looking for movement out in the desert, nothing. As we got to the main road we saw a car stopped on the side of the road with the back door open. Looked like he was changing a tire. We slowed to see if he needed help and lo and behold...he was giving Petey water!! That dog who is almost 15 years old had walked two miles in that three hours. He was headed to town! That was only one of the many death dodging stories of Petey. Our granddaughter calls him "the dog that never dies".
