"The Folly" was re-named as The Turner Folly in 2014, after John Turner, who was one of the first settlers on Kangaroo Island. The new signs were installed by Ralph Turner, the 3rd generation of the family. You will pass these signs while driving through "The Folly" on the main road into Kingscote.
Why is it called a "Folly"? 120+ years ago, John Turner decided to raise the road, which was often boggy, and he put in the first road-side drain pipe with a pick, shovel and a wheel barrow. Everyone thought this was a foolish idea! Hence, the location of the drain pipe came to be known as ‘The Folly’, despite being very successful. He was a productive businessman, who was on the town council, and a big part of Kangaroo Island’s history.
Definition of ‘Folly': the state or quality of being foolish, lack of understanding and sense or a foolish action, practice, idea, etc.
Take care on this busy road. Parking is best on the Northern Side of the road.
