Geocache Description:

Formerly "Bird On! #1: MetCenter Disc Golf Course" The first placed and last survivor of my original Bird On! series of caches placed in areas good for birding.   Can be a park and grab if you've got enough caches under your belt.

About the Bird On! Series:

My primary hobby is birding, so I tend to go around looking for places with tons of birds to find.  These caches are intended to celebrate those places, and hopefully get a few more birder / geocachers to either revisit familiar haunts or find new spots to check out.

About the Location:

While not a well-known birding locale, MetCenter Disc Golf Course is (contrary to its tongue-in-cheek signage) a publicly-accessible greenbelt in land formerly owned by various defense industry concerns.  The scrubland and weedy areas adjacent to the stream on the south side of the course (a minor tributary of Onion Creek) are good for sparrows in the cool months; the trees attract woodpeckers and migrating warblers.  The drying basins and pond may attract waders (such as Yellow-crowned Night-Heron) and flycatchers.  The course itself is good for open-country birds, and raptors such as Crested Caracara fly overhead with fair frequency. Rarities that have been recorded here include Vermilion Flycatcher  In spring, it's a good place to go looking for bluebonnets on nearby open ground, though a bit less so now that some of the former bluebonnet fields have fallen victim to new development.  The course itself stretches for over a mile and a half, with lots of good habitat throughout.

Of course, it's mostly used for frolf, so keep your head in the game if you decide to go crack open the binocular case and find some birds.  The cache location should be pretty safe from flying discs, though!

An ongoing tally of birds recorded at MetCenter Disc Golf Course is located here.

About the Cache:

The cache is a repurposed pill bottle, large enough for smaller trackables. Bring your own pen, please!  Make sure to seal the cache carefully to avoid moisture -- it may not rain often in Austin, but you never know when the next Texas flood is a-comin'.

FTF Prize:

A 2008 $1 coin featuring Andrew Jackson, and a fresh log to sign!

Congratulations to Godot on the FTF!
