Geocache Description:

This cache is located in an inner city park containing a large pond. You will need to walk approx. 7 kilometres (I told you it was large) over flat ground, mainly on paved paths. It is not advised to undertake this cache in late Feb. or early March due to alternative use of the park in these times.

What You Need:

These instructions, a pen/pencil and a comfortable pair of shoes. (You can access most locations on a bike if you wish) A calculator for some simple arithmetic may also be handy if your maths is somewhat lacking.
It is a small cache, so only very small items can be exchanged.

1) START LOCATION: S 37º 50.754 / E 144º 58.035

You should be beside a carpark with a sign nearby saying "Pelican Lawn". In front of the word Pelican is a number a.

bbb = (a x 35) + 25
ccc = (a x a x a x a) - 9

2) S 37º 51.bbb / E 144º 58.ccc

You should be at the Body Curl Board. dd is the number of repetitions required for Championship Par shown on the nearby board.

3) S 37º 51.297 / E 144º 58.574

The plaque on the stone commemorates the former site of some Army Barracks. eeee is the year they started using the park and ffff is the year they finished.

g = (ffff – eeee) divided by 11
h = g x 2

4) S 37º 51.g87 / E 144º 58.h87

ii is the number of letters contained in the suburb in which the fountain was made.

jjj = ( ii x 20 ) + 61
kkk = ( ii x 60 ) + 76

5) S 37º 51.jjj / E 144º 58.kkk

There is a plaque commemorating this tree and the surrounding area (which is special to the local inhabitants). mmmm is the year that the plaque was placed by St. Kilda City Council.

nnn = mmmm – 1002
ooo = mmmm – 1532

6) S 37º 50.nnn / E 144º 58.ooo

Do NOT attempt to get to this location – it is in the pond. However, within 100 metres of it on the Eastern shore of the pond is a sign re Trial Fishing Zone. (There are also a few others around the pond). pppp is the last 4 digits of the phone number shown.

7) S 37º 50.361 / E 144º 58.255

Nearby is another exercise station, this one is number 16. qq is the number of repetitions required for Championship par.

8) S 37º 50.510 / E 144º 58.044

You are now at the lookout tower. The number of steps to the top is 2 to the power of r.

(A lesson in maths: 2 to the power of r is 2 x 2 x 2 …. r times. i.e. 2 to the power of 2 is 2 x 2 = 4, 2 to the power of 3 is 2 x 2 x 2 = 8. So 2 to the power of 4 is 16, 5 is 32, 6 is 64, etc. etc.).

9) S 37º 50.795 / E 144º 57.963

You are close to the starting location and should be at an Oval dedicated to a past cricketer. He joined South Melbourne Cricket Club in ssss and played until tttt.

Now its time to get that calculator out.

UU = pppp – mmmm
VVV = ( r + 1 ) x UU x dd
WWW = VVV + 1
X = tttt – ssss
YY = qq + X –3
ZZZ = WWW – YY

FINAL LOCATION: S 37º 50.WWW / E 144º 57.ZZZ

Note: The last co-ordinate was originally published erroneously as E 144º 58.ZZZ. My thanks to Maccamob for finding this error.

The cache is a small 0.5 litre bucket with a clear lid. There can be passers by so don’t let them see what you are doing. Please ensure the cache is well hidden from view when finished.
