Geocache Description:

There are eight caches in the RI Series which will take you around Raymond Island.

Raymond Island is 243km east of Melbourne on the Princes Highway and 18km south east of Bairnsdale. Access to the island is 200 metres from Paynesville by car ferry. Presently it costs $14 for a return trip by car or free for pedestrians and cyclists. Raymond Island is approximately 6km long and 2km wide. Raymond Island was named in honour of William Odell Raymond a magistrate from NSW who became a Gippsland squatter.

The park at the ferry has BBQ’s, picnic tables a children’s playground and public toilets. There are no shops on the island so bring your own supplies.

Raymond Island is one of the best places to see Koalas close up and there are plenty to see. Koalas were introduced to the island on the 25 September 1953 as a safeguard against extinction. 32 Koalas were sent from Phillip Island. Since then the koala population has flourished. The Koalas are managed by the Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI) and Parks Victoria and assisted by local volunteers to ensure a viable and healthy population.

This multi use to take you along the 1.2km Koala Trail. However all the plaques for information to work out the final coordinates have been removed. A new method is now in place to make this calculation. It doesnt have you walk or ride the Koala Trail however avail yourself to do the walk as it is very pleasant and you will see many koalas. The coordinates for this cache take you to the start of the trail. Here you will see a sign displaying telephone numbers to ring for Sick or injured wildlife. These numbers are required to work out the final coordinates to this cache.

A = 3rd digit of the first number

B = 3rd digit of the second number

C = 5th digit of the of the first number

D = 6th digit of the second number

E = 1st digit of either number
