Geocache Description:

A simple multistage cache hunt designed to highlight the history of Port Edwards, Wisconsin.

I got the idea for this cache after finding Hot Seat, a virtual cache meant to get people to visit the city of Port Washington. I figured it would be a good idea to put together a cache to get people to explore another 'Port' in Wisconsin... Port Edwards.

The cache hunt consists of 5 stages. The first 4 stages are simple 'virtual cache' sites that have something to do with the history of Port Edwards and the surrounding area. Your goal at each of the first 4 stages is to collect a particular piece of information. Using the information collected in the first 4 stages, the coordinates of the final cache can be calculated. The final cache is in a wooded area in a Port Edwards park.

Note that the first four stages can be completed in any order. I recommend completing them in the order listed if coming from the east and in the opposite order if coming from the west. You'll probably want to drive from stage to stage, and I've provided parking coordinates where appropriate. You may also want to bring a calculator for calculating the coordinates of the final cache if your math skills are rusty.

Stage #1:
N44 22.166' W89 51.527' (Parking: Same)

In what year was the pulp mill removed? This is variable A.

Stage #2:
N44 21.006' W89 51.348' (Parking: N44 21.082' W89 51.373')

What is the infantry regimen number listed here? (___ Wis.) This is variable B.

Hint: Ybbx sbe tenirfgbar. Nafjre vf gjrysgu.

Stage #3:
N44 20.369' W89 51.528' (Parking: N44 20.365' W89 51.580')

In what year was John Edwards, Jr. elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly? This is variable C.

Stage #4:
N44 20.867' W89 58.724' (Parking: Same)

In what year did Daniel Whitney mention a purchase of goods from Indians? This is variable D.

The location of the final cache is (refer to variable names assigned above):
N44 21.X' W89 52.Y'

X = (A - 1546) + B
Y = (C - D - 30) * 5

(Note: * means multiply)

Parking for the final cache is at:
N44 21.S' W89 52.T'

S = A - (B * 138)
T = (C - D) + 83

(This calculation is optional, but may make your life easier.)

Final cache container is a small rectangular tupperware. There are a few small items to trade and a logbook, but not room for much else. Cache is not far off of a walking trail, so be careful not to give the location away to other people enjoying the area.
