Following the introduction of Christianity as the official religion of the Roman Empire in the first decades of the IV century Diocletianopolis became an important Christian center - the seat of a bishop. Open City 10 early Christian basilicas of period IV - VI century, reflecting the development of early Christian architecture. This can be seen today in a well preserved and exhibited temples. Interest is only open until now basilica which was built in the middle of V century on the part of the barracks complex at the ancient city. In historical sources reported that at that time the city has ranked third largest city in the province of Thrace, after Philipopolis (Plovdiv) and Beroe (Stara Zagora).

След въвеждането на християнството като официална религия в римската империя през първите десетилетия на IV в., Диоклецианопол се превръща във важен християнски център – седалище на епископ. Откритите в града 10 раннохристиянски базилики от периода IV – VI в. отразяват особеностите в развитието на раннохристиянската архитектура. Това може да се види и днес в добре запазените и експонирани храмове. Интерес представлява единствената открита до сега двукорабна базилика, която е построена през средата на V в. върху част от казармения комплекс на античния град. В историческите извори се съобщава, че по това време градът се е нареждал на трето място по големина сред градовете в провинция Тракия, след Филипопол (Пловдив) и Берое (Стара Загора).
