Il castello San Giorgio è una fortificazione militare genovese che sorge sulle alture della città della Spezia, (detto anche "colle del Poggio") ed è raggiungibile mediante la via XXVII marzo la quale, oggi, attraversa le vecchie mura poste anticamente a difesa dell’abitato. Il nucleo originario del maniero, che è stato ricostruito nel corso dei secoli, sorse nel 1262 per volontà di Nicolò Fieschi, il quale volendo rafforzare il suo dominio nella zona, fece ampliare il vecchio forte già presente sul colle del Poggio. Ma nel 1273 le truppe della Repubblica genovese guidate da Oberto Doria, espugnarono, distrussero e saccheggiarono La Spezia battendo le truppe dei Fieschi. Nicolò Fieschi cedette tutti i suoi possedimenti alla Repubblica. Nel 1343 il castello venne ricostruito, anno in cui il doge Simone Boccanegra elesse il Luogo "de Spetia" a sede della nuova podesteria generatasi da quella di Carpena. Risale a questo periodo anche la costruzione delle nuove mura di cinta del borgo, delle quali oggi rimane una testimonianza di circa trecento metri. Nel breve tratto si possono ammirare ancora le caratteristiche merlature ghibelline e i camminamenti delle ronde delle guardie. Nel 1606 il castello fu nuovamente modificato e ristrutturato mediante la costruzione della fortezza superiore ad opera dei genovesi, che in quel periodo costruirono altre fortezze e castelli nell'area del golfo (come Portovenere e Lerici), al fine di aumentare le difese dei possedimenti. Con il Regno di Sardegna vennero riorganizzate le opere difensive del territorio spezzino. Il castello di San Giorgio venne ceduto all'Amministrazione comunale e addirittura nel 1885 rischiò di essere demolito per costruire nella sua area il nuovo ospedale civile.  Fortunatamente questo non avvenne. Dal Castello potrete ammirare la città di La Spezia ed il Golfo dei Poeti nel suo splendore. 


[ENGLISH] San Giorgio Castle is a military citadel of the Republic of Genoa that lays on the hills of La Spezia, (also called the “hill of the knoll”). You can reach it proceeding on XXVII marzo road that nowadays crosses the ancient walls that once defended the town. The original core of the fortress was built in 1262 by the genoese noble Nicolo’ Fieschi with the intention to strength his dominion of this area, and during the centuries it has been modified. In 1273 the army of the Republic of Genoa led by Oberto Doria, assaulted and looted La Spezia and defeated the Fieschi army that had to surrender to the Republic of Genoa. In 1343 the Castle was rebuilt, in the same year the “Doge” of the Republic of Genoa Simone Boccanegra raised La Spezia (Spetia) as the “Podestà” (mayor authority) of the area. During this period the new walls were also built to defend the town, now only 300mt remain. But even in this short portion is possible to see the characteristic battlements in “ghibelline” style and the walkways for the changing of the guards. In 1606 the castle was again modified as the upper fortress was introduced by the Genoeses, that simultaneously were building fortresses and castles in all the gulf (like in Portovenere and Lerici), in order to defend their territories. During the Sardegna Kingdom domination the fortifications were reorganized in all the La Spezia area. The San Giogio Castle was then under the administration of the local mayor and in 1885 it was closed to being demolished for the construction of a new hospital. Luckly the hospital was built on another site. From the Castle you can enjoy an amazing view over the gulf.
