In the 20 years or so before the first light was built here at Sandy Point in 1829, 59 schooners, sloops, brigs, and ships all ran aground on the rocks surrounding the island. The current structure is the fourth lighthouse built on the site and was made of granite and iron in 1867.
When you arrive at the light you will also find memorial benches and two sections of commemorative engraved bricks.
