If you feel down-and-out in your career, take some comfort in the fact that at least you're not Gil Gunderson. This secondary character on The Simpsons has to be the world's most unsuccessful businessman. When asked for his occupation, Ol' Gil would have to say "Various"... and that would be an understatement!
After a 20 year career in real estate (which he only kept up by selling his own house to himself several thousand times), Gil hasn't managed to hold down one job for longer than a few days.
Many of Gil's large number of jobs are in sales of one kind or another. Gil was a car salesman who didn't sell any cars. He used to work at The Springfield Shopper, trying to sell newspaper subscriptions. He tried pitching a product for Amway during an AA meeting after supposedly losing three jobs in two days.
One of his most miserable jobs was as a bank security guard, where he was shot several times by robbers just as he was entering the bank for his first day of work.
Gil has had several "homes". He once lived at the Springfield Men's Mission hostel but was forced out of the premises because he had overstayed the "six month occupancy limit." A defiant Gil walked straight into a shady organ donation clinic to sell his eyes for cash. Gil used to live in a hot-air balloon, where his lone possession was a hot plate (on which he still had two more payments to make). Gil has also lived in a storage locker.

While living in North Springfield, Gil worked as a Computer Network Technician, an Insurance Underwriter, and a Web Designer and Developer. After moving to West Springfield, Gil found work as a Production Logistics Co-ordinator, an Air Traffic Controller, and (ironically) as an Employment Counsellor
You have to hand it to Ol' Gil, he may not be able to keep a job, but over the years he must have developed some excellent job search skills.
