Just to the west of this ridge, Chloride Flats boasts the first official mining location of Silver City. "Discovered" by General Bullard, this beautiful, small valley must have looked much different than it does today. On the hike to the cache, spectacular 360 degree views are nonstop. The cache site has great views to the east toward Signal Peak, Kneeling Nun, the Black Range, and more. The cache itself is in a plastic container protected from the omnipresent New Mexico UV.
There are two parking options to get to this cache. The first is to park at the gate just off of Hwy 180 guarding Western New Mexico University's Police Academy. There is a social parking area that can accomodate a few cars, with pedestrian access through the fence to the right side. If the gate is open, you can drive up the hill and park in the large Police Academy parking lot. Either way you get up the paved road on the North side of the gate, you are looking for a trail following the east side of a chain link fence before the pavement hooks west for parking. The trail will climb up the ridge and eventually fork. Finding the cache should be quite straightforward.
