The Tonkawa Public Library
Tonkawa was the 4th city in Kay County to establish a library. The Tonkawa Public Library was first started in 1922 , thanks to the many women who felt it would asset the community. At its inception , the library was housed in the study room of the high school. On March 7,1922, the city council finally authorized a tax levy strictly for library purposes.
In September of 1935 the library was moved into a new building that had been erected as a WPA-FERA (Works Progress Administration - Federal Emergency Relief Administration ) project; Its cost was between $10,000 and $11,000 dollars.
In 1986 J.W.McAninch donated $150,000 dollars to the Friends of the Library. Need for more space was motivating factor in the expansion. With another $100,000 dollars our Library was expanded to 5,000 square feet.
