PHIL: Our local helper is currently in an other part of Cuba and will not be able to replace the cachebox in the next weeks. We have become very attached to this geocache but we are also not happy with the current situation. That's why we decided to archive this geocache today and hope that we will maybe find a better solution in the future.

Geocache Description:

ATTENTION: Please note that it is not allowed to bring a GPS-receiver to Cuba without prior permit. However, smartphones with GPS are OK. There are good caching-apps with offline-maps and offline-PQ-support. With the cache description it should even be possible to find the cache without GPS.

Salto del Caburní

The waterfall "Salto del Caburní" is a beautiful hiking destination near Trinidad in Cuba and is located in the "Gran Parque Natural de Collantes". The trail about 4 km leads through the depths of the jungle – past huge rock formations and lush grown vegetation. You can watch a varied world of animals and plants, enjoy the waterfalls and its even allowed to swim in a natural swimming pool below the falls. Sometimes a "horse-riding-taxi" is offered for those who don't like to hike back uphill. We would be happy to read in your online-log which animals you noticed while your hike or if you post some photos. If you liked the geocache you can also give us a little favorite-point.

Expect an hour down and 1½ hours back up for this hike. Some slopes are a bit steep and can be slippery after rain. At the height of the dry season you possibly may be a bit disappointed by the waterfalls. For reaching the area it is required to pay an entrance-fee at the trailhead (we had to pay 9 CUC, children had to pay 4,50 CUC). Like reported in a log this access-point may be closed after 4pm. The Cache may also be reachable from the bridge in Vegas Grandes (near the alternative Trailhead) over a path along the spectacular Vegas Grande Waterfalls. (You could also try a longer hike starting from the Trailhead T1 and ending at the alternative Trailhead T2.) But we haven't tried that second path so we can not say anything about it's conditions!

Finding the Cache

The cachebox is reachable directly from the path. Remember that you are in a protected nature-park, please respect the unique environment here. Don't forget to bring your own pen. After reaching the canyon you will see a sign leading to "Salto de Aqua" and "Piscina Natural". Follow the straight path to the Waterfalls (Salto de Aqua) and climb up the little ladder. Shortly before you reach the next handrail you can find the geocache in a big hole of the rockface on your left side. It is covered with a stone. Please take the cache only from the top-left opening which is visible on the spoiler picture. Watch out for the "cacheguard"-animal and its friends. Rehide the cache exactly like you found it and take care that you will not be watched by others.

Salto del Caburní

La cascada "Salto del Caburní" es un hermoso destino de senderismo cerca de Trinidad en Cuba y se encuentra en el Gran Parque Natural de Collantes. El sendero de unos 4 km conduce a través de las profundidades de la selva - más allá de enormes formaciones rocosas y vegetación exuberante. Usted puede ver un mundo variado de animales y plantas, disfrutar de las cascadas e incluso se permite nadar en una piscina natural debajo de las cataratas. A veces se ofrece un "taxi-montar a caballo" para aquellos que no les gusta caminar cuesta arriba. Calcular con una hora para el camino hacia abajo y con 1½ horas para el camino de vuelta de esta caminata. Algunas pendientes son un poco empinadas y pueden ser resbaladizas después de la lluvia. En el apogeo de la estación seca posiblemente puede ser un poco decepcionante por las cascadas. Para llegar a la zona se requiere pagar una cuota de entrada en el sendero (tuvimos que pagar 9 CUC, los niños tuvieron que pagar 4,50 CUC). Como se informó en un registro, este punto de acceso puede estar cerrado después de las 4 pm. La caché también puede ser accesible desde el puente en Vegas Grandes (cerca de la alternativa Trailhead) en un camino a lo largo de las espectaculares Vegas Grande Cascadas. (También se puede intentar una caminata más larga a partir de la Trailhead T1 y terminando en la alternativa Trailhead T2). Pero no hemos probado ese segundo camino por lo que no podemos decir nada sobre sus condiciones!

Cómo encontrar la caché

La cachebox se puede acceder directamente desde la ruta. Recuerde que usted está en un parque protegido de la naturaleza, respete por favor el ambiente único aquí. No se olvides de traer su propia pluma. Después de llegar al cañón verá una señal que conduce a "Salto de Aqua" y "Piscina Natural". Siga el camino recto a las Cascadas (Salto de Aqua) y suba por la pequeña escalera. Poco antes de llegar a la siguiente barandilla se puede encontrar el geocache en un gran agujero de la roca a su lado izquierdo. Está cubierto con una piedra. Por favor, tome la memoria caché sólo desde la abertura superior izquierda que es visible en la imagen del spoiler. Cuidado con el "cacheguard" -animal y sus amigos. Oculte el caché exactamente dónde lo encontró y tenga cuidado de que no seá observado por otros.
