Geocache Description:

Christ Church Cathedral is the oldest standing church in Louisville.  Its original 58 by 76 foot church nave and bell tower, which was located at the front center of the structure, was completed in 1824.  The roof of the original part of the church is supported by 14 hand hewn trusses each 56 feet in length.  It’s twenty once inch thick walls were constructed of brick.

The church has undergone at least ten additions, modifications, and facelifts throughout its history while retaining common elements of a typical early American meeting house.

The most dramatic renovation took place in 1870.  That year a new façade of quarried limestone blocks was installed.  The original bell tower was demolished and replaced with a steeple tower on the north side and a replacement bell tower on the south.

This alteration dramatically changed the exterior appearance of the Cathedral.  During this period of time ten exceptional quality Tiffany stain glass windows were installed.  Christ Church became the Cathedral of the Episcopal Diocese of Kentucky in 1894.

The parish’s community service achievements include establishing the first night school in Louisville for underprivileged boys and girls in 1867.  Establishing Louisville’s first industrial school in 1872 followed closely by starting the Orphanage of the Good Shepherd.  During both World Wars the Parish cared for and entertained soldiers stationed at Camp Taylor and Fort Knox, and during the 1937 flood it opened its doors as a refuge for the homeless.

One of the early prominent church leaders was Samuel Churchill (1779-1863).  In addition to being a church trustee he was a Kentucky Senator and member of the House of Representatives. He owned the land that was willed to his two sons, John and Henry Churchill, that would eventually become Churchill Downs.   Samuel's daughter,  Abigail Prather Churchill, married Meriwether Lewis Clark, who is credited for creating the Kentucky Jockey's Club and the establishment of Churchill Downs.
Christ Church Cathedral was added to the National Register of Historic places in 1973.
