Carne sits next to Pendower beach, creating just over 1 km of south facing sands. To the East sits the Nare head, which gives its name to the rather exclusive hotel that sits overlooking its sands. Both beaches are part of National Trust land, however the large carpark (with over 180 spaces), which this year unfortunately began to enforce parking charges via a ticket machine. NT members however still can park for free. The beach is mostly flat, and for the majority of the year, mostly shingle free. There is a large slipway, which affords excellent access for those with watercraft. Indeed, I have taken my Kayak out on the sea here - due to the bays reletively sheltered nature. It is not one of the more famous surfing beaches, with poor surf - due to the rather flat drop off of the beach off shore. In Autumn and Winter when winds are stronger, there are days where the surf is better than expected. Swimming is fairly safe on the beach - although it is notable to state there is no life saving equipment posted at either Carne, or Pendower - and no lifeguard service. Carne is a rare beach - affording dog owners year round access, however - they ask owners to place pets on leads from the times of 9am and 6pm. There are well serviced beach side toilets, mostly only open in the summer - and a small traveling cafe, based on a Citroen H van, can now be seen in the carpark in the warmer months.
My wife and I enjoy coming here regularly - usually in the evening, to take our Geohound Lilly for a walk. We thought it would be wonderful to place a cache out for others to find near our favourite family beach.
Cache placed with kind permission of the National Trust
