Geocache Description:

Another cache which shows you the highlights of Walthamstow.  This time you're looking for a 5ml sample tube by Waltham Forest Town Hall.

Before you, in my opinion, is Walthamstow's finest building, the Town Hall.  Situated in immaculately maintained grounds with pristine lawns and plantings it really is a landmark.

In 1929 the new municaplity of Walthamstow was created and a competition took place to design the Town Hall (to replace the building on Orford Road) which was won by Philip Dalton Hepworth.  Built of Portland stone it dates from 1942 in a stripped down classical style inspired by Scandinavian design from the interwar period.  The green copper lantern is particularly evocative of this style of architecture.

To the right is the Assembly Hall, also by Hepworth, which is contemporary with the Town Hall.  It is often used for events and weddings and can hold up to 1000 people.

On the left is the post war Magistrates Court.  Whilst it's not to everyone's taste I think it fits quite well due to its simple, modernist design and use of complementary materials.

Both the Town Hall and Assembly Hall as well as the stone gate piers on Forest Road, war memorial and flag poles are grade II listed.

The early bird does indeed catch the worm. Congratulations to grobo1959 for the FTF!
