Εδώ στη Γαύδο, ο Βασίλειος Τζουνάρας λειτουργούσε τον νοτιότερο ραδιοφωνικό σταθμό της Ευρώπης για σχεδόν δύο δεκαετίες:

Μάθαμε λεπτομέρειες για την εκπληκτική ιστορία αυτού του καναλιού μέσα από ένα ντοκιμαντέρ διάρκειας 20 λεπτών στον alpha-TV, το οποίο δεν είναι πλέον διαδικτυακό.
Αλλά εδώ μπορείτε να μάθετε την ιστορία, γιατί έγραψα έγκαιρα το περιεχόμενο της τεκμηρίωσης ως περίληψη:
Από το 1985 μέχρι το 1990 περνούσε ο Βασίλης Τζουνάρας τα καλοκαίρια στην Παλαιόχωρα και έμενε στα Γαυδιώτικα, που είναι η νοτιοανατολική γειτονιά του Παλαιόχωρα. Εκεί ο Βας περίμενε κάθε πρωί να δει τη Γαύδο μακριά με την καλή πρωινή ατμόσφαιρα. Καμία ιδέα τότε τι θα προέκυπτε ...
Ένα πρωί καθόταν ο Βασίλης στο μπαλκόνι του και παρακολουθούσε ένα ξύλινο καραβάκι να φτάνει στο λιμάνι. Κατέβηκε για μια κουβέντα και έμαθε ότι το καραβάκι θα αναχωρήσει για την Αφρική. Έτσι είπε ο καπετάνιος και έδειξε στους λόφους στην ορίζοντα. Ο Βασίλης απάντησε, ότι είναι η Γαύδος. Ο καπετάν: “Βεβαίως, αν και είναι σχεδόν Αφρική!”
Λοιπόν, ο Βασίλης δεν έχασε την ευκαιρία, μπήκε στο πλοίο που τον πήγε στη Γάυδο. Ο Βασίλης: “'Μόλις που περπάτησα στο νησί και είδα αυτό που είδα και ένιωσα αυτό που ένιωσα, μου έδωσε το νησί μια ενέργεια. Με συντάραξε αυτός ο χώρος. Έτσι αποφάσισα να μείνω.”
Ο Βασίλης είχε δουλέψει σαν μουσικός παραγωγός για ραδιόφωνα της Κρήτης και αποφάσισε να κάνει κάτι εδώ που ήξερε να το κάνει. Ο Βασίλης χαμογελαστός: “Αποφάσισα να ανοίξω ένα ραδιοφωνικό σταθμό χωρίς τίποτα στα χέρια μου. Σκέφτηκα, αν δεν το τολμήσω τώρα, δεν θα γίνει ποτέ. Και είμαι λίγο έτσι ... αν πω να κάνω αυτό θα το κάνω ακόμα και αν ο κόσμος χαλάσει.”
Σύντομα πήγε στην Αθήνα να αγοράσει τον ολόκληρο εξοπλισμό, όλα διπλά από τον εκτυπωτή μέχρι τους πομπούς να μην σταματήσει η εκπομπή αν χαλάσει κάτι. Γύρισε με ένα καράβι γεμάτο με δέματα.
Ο Βασίλης: “Ξεκίνησα μια οδύσσεια, μόνος μου. Χωρίς γη, χωρίς στούντιο, χωρίς τίποτα, χωρίς ρεύμα. Το νησί δεν είχε ρεύμα, όμως. Μόνο οι τηλεφωνίες είχαν ρεύμα για τις κεραίες τους, είχαν φωτοβολταϊκά και γεννήτριες. Λοιπόν, ήθελα επικοινωνία με τις τηλεφωνίες και ήθελε υπομονή να περιμένω για απαντήσεις. Στο τέλος, όταν πήρα την απάντηση ότι έχω ρεύμα, ήξερα ότι θα γίνουν όλα.”
Έφτιαξε ένα ξύλινο δωματιάκι, μόνο 1.5 επί 1.5 μέτρα, και έβαζε όλο τον εξοπλισμό: υπολογιστή, μίξερ, μικρόφωνα και τις συσκευές ραδιοφώνου. Έτοιμο το πρώτο στούντιο του GAVDOS FM. Αυτό το δωματιάκι, αυτό το κουτί το έβαλε δίπλα στις κεραίες των τηλεφωνιών.
Μόνο για να ανεβεί το εύθραυστο καλώδιο στο στύλο κεραιών είχε ανάγκη για βοήθεια κάποιων άλλων. Κατά τύχη πέρασαν τη σωστή στιγμή δύο Ισπανοί τουρίστες, ένα ζευγάρι. Ο πατέρας του άντρα ήταν ειδικός για κεραίες, που δούλευε πολλά χρόνια στη Βραζιλία και είχε δει όλη την Βραζιλία από όλους τους βραζιλιάνικους στύλους κεραιών.
Πρώτη φορά ανέβασε ο Βασίλης τον διακόπτη στο ON AIR 28/10/2003 την ημέρα τον γενεθλίων του στης 10 το βράδυ με αρκετές διακοπές του σταθμού μέχρι να τον τελειώσει. Στις αρχές Ιανουαρίου 2004 ξεκίνησε κανονική λειτουργία και μέχρι το 2018 εκπέμπει 24 ώρες το 24ωρο στους FM 88,8 στη νότια Ελλάδα και μέσω Διαδικτύου έως το 2021 σε όλο τον κόσμο.

Here on Gavdos, Vassilis Tzounaras operated the southernmost radio station in Europe for almost two decades:

We learned details about the amazing story of this channel through a 20-minute documentary on alpha-TV, which is no longer online.
But here you can find out the story, because I wrote the contents of the documentation in time as a summary:
From 1985 to 1990 spent Vassilis Tsounaras his time in Paleochora, or more specific in Gavdiotika. Gavdiotika is the south-eastern part of Paleochora. Each day with clear skies far in the distance the island of Gavdos caught Vassilis' eye. At this time he did not yet know how it would end …
One morning – sitting on his balcony – Vassilis saw a wooden fisher-boat approaching and docking at Paleochora. He went down and asked the captain for his plans. He wanted to leave for Africa, told the captain, and looked over to the hills at the horizon. But this is Gavdos, answered Vassilis. The captain: „This is almost Africa, isn't it?“.
Anyway, when the boat left Paleochora, Vassilis was part of the crew and arrived at Gavdos for staying for ever. Vassilis: „Just in the moment, when I placed my foot on the island and when I saw what I saw and when I felt how I felt, the island gave me energy. This place seized me and I decided to stay.“
Vassilis was working until then as producer for different radio stations of Crete and he wanted to do something what fitted to his knowledge and experience. Vassilis smiling: „I decided to start a radio station … with nothing in my hands. I thought, if I would not dare to do it now, it will happen never again. Whenever I have an idea and the decision is done, I cannot stop proceeding to reach it even if the world collapses.“
Little later he was in Athens to buy all the equipment needed for a radio station. He ordered everything twice, from printer to transmitting antennas. The little boat which brought him back to Gavdos was packed with his stuff.
Vassilis: „From then on started an odyssey. No ground, no studio, nothing, no electricity. All the island did not have electricity that time. Most important was to start to communicate with the telephone companies. They had photovoltaic conversion and generators to run their antennas. Patience was needed to wait for an answer to my requests. But finally I got an answer, and everything was set into motion.“
He did built a little hut or better a wooden box of 1.5 x 1.5 meters. In there he packed all the technical equipment – computer, mixer, microphones, transmitter – and brought the box close to the antenna of a telephone company. This way he installed the first „studio“ of GAVDOS FM.“
The only task which he could not manage single-handed was to rise up the fragile antenna-cable. But just in time a Spanish couple on holidays passed by to help him. And they had even an idea of the task to be done. The father of the guy has been antenna specialist and did work for years in Brasilia where he had seen the country from the top of almost each Brazilian antenna mast.
On his birthday in the evening at 10 p.m., at 28th of October 2003 switched Vassilis the station for the first time to ON AIR, even when the station was not already fully finished. There were a couple of breaks until the regular broadcasting started in the first days of January 2004. Until October 2018 Gavdos FM broadcasted 24 hours a day on FM 88.8 to southern Greece and via the Internet until 2021 around the world.

Details zu der erstaunlichen Geschichte dieses Senders erfuhren wir durch eine 20-minütige Dokumentation auf alpha-TV, die inzwischen nicht mehr online ist.
Doch hier erfahrt Ihr die Geschichte, da ich rechtzeitig den Inhalt der Dokumentation als Zusammenfassung aufgeschrieben hatte:
In den Jahren 1985 bis 1990 verbrachte Vassilis Tsounaras regelmäßig seinen Sommerurlaub in Paleochora, um genau zu sein in Gavdiotika. Gavdiotika ist der südöstliche Ortsteil von Paleochora. In der Ferne hatte Vassilis bei gutem Wetter jeden Tag die Insel Gavdos vor Augen. Damals hatte er noch keine Ahnung, wie das enden würde …
Eines Morgens saß Vassilis auf seinem Balkon und sah, wie ein Holzboot auf Paleochora zulief und hier festmachte. Er ging hinunter zu dem Kapitän und fragte nach seinen Plänen. Er wolle nach Afrika, sagte der Kapitän, und zeigte auf die Hügel am Horizont. Das ist doch Gavdos erklärte Vassili. Der Kapitän: „Das ist doch fast wie Afrika!“
Kurz und gut, Vassilis stieg an Bord und setzte mit diesem Holzboot hinüber nach Gavdos und blieb für immer. Vassilis: „Sobald ich die Insel betreten hatte und sah, was ich sah, und fühlte, was ich fühlte, erfüllte sie mich mit einer besonderen Energie. Dieser Ort ergriff mich vollständig und ich beschloss zu bleiben.“
Vassilis arbeitete bis dahin als Musikproduzent für verschiedene Radiosender Kretas und beschloss, hier etwas zu tun, was er wirklich konnte. Vassilis: „Ich beschloss hier eine Radiostation zu errichten mit nichts als meinen Händen. Ich überlegte, wenn ich mich jetzt nicht traue, wird es nie etwas. Und wenn ich mir etwas vorgenommen habe, dann lasse ich normalerweise nicht locker, wenn auch noch so viele Steine im Weg liegen.“
Kurz darauf fuhr er nach Athen und besorgte alles, was er für einen Radiosender brauchte, und zwar alles doppelt vom Drucker bis zu Sendeantennen. Das kleine Boot, mit dem er zurückkehrte, war vollgepackt mit seinen Paketen.
Vassili: „Dann begann für mich eine Odyssee. Ohne Grundstück, ohne Studio, ohne alles, ohne Strom! Die ganze Insel hatte damals keinen Strom. Der bedeutendste Schritt war, dass ich mit den Telefongesellschaften Kontakt aufnahm. Für deren Antennen hatten sie Strom, sie hatten Fotovoltaik und Generatoren. Ich schrieb Ihnen von meinem Vorhaben. Es brauchte reichlich Geduld bis eine Antwort kam. Doch als die Antwort da war, kam alles ins Rollen.“
Er baute eine Hütte oder besser eine Holzbox, mit einer Grundfläche von 1,5 x 1,5 m. Hinein packte er das gesamte technische Equipment – Computer, Mischpult, Mikrofone, Sendegeräte – und installierte so das erste „Studio“ von GAVDOS FM. Diese Box brachte er zur Antenne der Telefongesellschaft und stellte sie dort auf.
Nur für das Hochziehen des empfindlichen Antennenkabels auf den Mast der Telefongesellschaft benötigte er fremde Hilfe. Alles andere erledigte er vollkommen alleine. Ganz zufällig kam zwei Touristen vorbei, ein Paar aus Spanien. Sie boten sich an, ihm beim Kabelverlegen zu helfen. Die Arbeit war dem Mann nicht ganz fremd, da sein Vater jahrelang in Brasilien als Antennenspezialist arbeitete und schon sämtliche Antennenmasten Brasiliens bestiegen hatte.
An seinem Geburtag, am 28. Oktober 2003, abends um 22 Uhr legte Vassilis den Schalter erstmals um und GAVDOS FM 88.8 war ON AIR. In den folgenden Wochen gab es manche Unterbrechung, da Vassilis noch eine Reihe von Dingen richten musste, bis die Station vollständig einsatzfähig war. Anfang Januar 2004 nahm er den regulären Betrieb auf und bis 2018 heute sendete er 24 Stunden täglich auf FM 88.8 nach Südgriechenland und per Internet auch noch bis 2021 rund um den Globus.
