Geocache Description:

Karura Forest #64: Amani Gardens

The cache, a small black-taped screw-topped tablet pot, is hidden in a small hole under the lower side of the obvious large wooden mass.

This part of the forest is a recently restored grassy picnic area with plenty of shade trees. In the early 1900s it used to be a brickworks and the site of a forester's cottage, the small remaining part of which  - the fireplace wall - has been converted into a roofed shelter.

Until 2010, the whole area was completely choked with Lantana camara and Caesalpinia decapetala the Mauritius Thorn creeper or Cat's Claw, both notorious and globally widespread invasive species, still found in some other parts of the forest.

The area was cleared through the combined efforts of the Kenya Forestry Service and the Friends of Karura Forest and is the location of the black granite Amani Memorial which records the names of the 67 people killed in the terrorist attack on Westlands Mall on 21 September 2013.

To reach the cache location:

Enter the forest using the main Limuru Road entrance (Gate A) @ S01 14.827 E36 48.951 and after paying the entry and parking fee, proceed along the main access road, turning right at the barrier to reach the Amani Gardens / River Cafe parking area @ S01 14.577 E36 49.235.

This cache together with *** Karura Forest #37: Pining for a Cache? and GC4PD8X Karura Forest #2: Lily Lake may be easily accessed from the parking area.
