Exploratory 8: Tooling Around Paris (Park) Wherigo Cache

This cache has been archived.

duttonchristian: Even though this was a universal favorite of those who found it, the resources used by this cache and the difficulty in maintaining it (not to mention the cost of the stages, which was considerable), and the very few visits it is getting...

It is time to pull this one and make room for others.

It's likely that some of the stages will be reused so check this space...

Geocache Description:

We've had a lot of fun this year with some "Tools Required" caches and...anything worth doing is worth overdoing.

Our offering this year is an eight-stage Wherigo/multicache.
(listing rules require the type of cache be a Wherigo if a Wherigo cartridge is used for any part of the cache)

You are not required to run the Wherigo cartridge to find this cache. There is another option below for those who do not have access to a Wherigo player.

Each stage will require a different kind of tool to acquire the needed information.

Below is a complete, exhaustive, and way-more-than-necessary list of the tools you may need.

  • Hard Hat with lamp
  • Climbing harness
  • Spotter
  • Paper clip
  • Smartphone
  • Garmin Oregon
  • UV flashlight
  • Batteries
  • M1 Abrams
  • Fishing pole
  • Selfie stick
  • 40' Fiberglass ladder
  • A better brain than you have
  • Mirror
  • 1200mm Macro Zoom lens
  • Handheld barcode scanner
  • 50' climbing rope
  • Magnetic probe
  • ANT+
  • Toothbrush
  • Emergency rescue beacon
  • Waders
  • Snowshoes (in season)
  • Thermometer
  • Notepad and writing implement
  • Energy drinks
  • Anti-gravity unit
  • Crowbar
  • 20lb. Hammer, personally signed by John Henry
  • Semi with 53' trailer to haul all this stuff

To begin this cache, you have two options:

    1. Use a Wherigo-compatible device and run the "Tooling Around Paris (Park)" cartridge. Once the cartridge is complete, you will be at the posted coordinates and the cartridge will give you directions to the next stage.
      Download Cartridge

    2. Go to the posted coordinates with a friend and get out your smartphones. You will need to have a data connection and browse to the GeoMob Website and enter the number 1866 after the question "Which mob are you attending?"
If you have two (or more) smartphones viewing this mob page, you should get the success screen with further instructions.

This cache may take more than one trip if you don't have the correct tool for the puzzle at any one of the stages. Your best bet is to have a friend along with a complete selection of "The Tools of the Trade".

As a last resort, you may contact
our geocaching mentor for help. He told us he will actually meet you there with the proper tools in his bag!

PLEASE DO NOT TRY TO FORCE OR DISASSEMBLE ANY STAGE!!

If you have the right tool, every stage will yield up its secrets with very little effort on your part.

    Tools you will NOT need:
    • Screwdriver
    • Hammer
    • Saw
    • Shovel
    • Wrench
    • Composition-4
    • Any tool whose operation will cause damage
The quickest way for this cache to be archived is for some careless and inconsiderate cacher to damage any one of these (relatively) expensive stages.
We simply don't have the resources to replace them.

Take the attributes we have selected seriously.

This park is perpetually muddy off the paths and you WILL spend most of your time off the official trails. Waterproof footwear will likely be necessary. Waders will not be needed, but knee boots might well be.

Likewise, there are a LOT of briars and poison ivy, though the paths between stages SHOULD avoid most of them (if you follow the deer trails you will be better off). Long pants and sleeves are quite necessary unless you go for that rugged and bleeding look.

Starting at Stage 3, you should take note of the special letter/number code found at each stage. You will need them at the final.

I did have quite a bit of trouble assigning a difficulty/terrain levels to this cache. Each stage is at least 3-star difficulty, but there are eight stages! Likewise, every stage is at least 3-star terrain (according to the clayjar rating system) So, just to play it safe, I have decided to give it a 5D/4T rating due to cumulative effect.

Now, as if I haven't been long-winded enough, how about some cryptic and probably useless clues...

Stage 2: Make sure to listen to what the ANTs have to say.
Stage 3: Channel your inner monkey (but hold tight to your tools).
    Stage 4: Take notice.
Stage 5: This one will drive you crazy.
    Stage 6: Plumb the depths.
Stage 7: LEaD me to the cache (from both directions).
    Stage 8: A,B,C... & 1,2,3...
